Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
